Blind Faith: Part 1 – A God We Cannot See?

When doubt sets in about God, it is usually because of two thoughts. Either you have never experienced Him and are still on a journey of seeking. Or you have believed in God but come upon a deep dark patch in life that seems to declare to you that God could not be in this.

We feel our way through life, hoping for the best.

And many times the worry eventually sets in, tantamount to walking in a quagmire that you have to sludge your way through. Or worse, get stuck in.

In a chapter about love, the Apostle Paul speaks of seeing but “not seeing” in his last statement before his closing argument that love was the greatest of all. Paul states, “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” 1 Corinthians 13:12 (KJV)

We don’t have a long vision like God, so we see things partly. We can’t understand all the mysteries of the universe, so we question. We sometimes can’t see or even feel God, so we wonder if He’s even there.

The Creation Speaks To His Glory

“Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?” Stephen Hawking, “A Brief History of Time.”

Ever since the dawn of time, man has been plagued by these questions that the famous physicist Hawking queried three decades ago. The answers to his questions are fairly simple but unfortunately more difficult to grasp.

You see, the mathematical equations speak to a universe created, but where does it come from? A Big Bang Theory is proposed that light erupted and started an ever-expanding universe but where is it going, why did it start and what is my place in it?

Intelligent design teaches us that the universe is much too complex to have been borne on its own. If we can create a keyboard which I now use to type, connected to a laptop connected to a word processing software, connected to the internet which you then read. Then we know these things had a manufacturer and the purpose was to create a blog so that I, the writer, can share something with people who like to read such things.

Similarly, a long series of effective productions made a universe and if it had a Creator, maybe this is God. But, that’s the “who”? What happened to the “why,” and the “where,” and “what’s in it for me”?

The Apostle Paul mentioned in Colossians 1:16-17 (KJV), “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him, all things consist.”

You were created for His glory. He is in control of all things. And you have a planned eternal glory with a Saviour who loves you.

The Created Beings Are A Marvellous Wonder

Even physicists and mathematicians can see the complexity and grand order of the universe. There are systems and laws that keep it moving and in place. The earth and how it is fine-tuned for human life is a wonder. Our human bodies, DNA, organ structure and inner workings are all still being solved. Can this not point to a marvellous, indescribable God?

Your bodies have a DNA coded for life and cells with mitochondrial DNA stretching back to the first mother on earth.

Your mind is so complex that neuronal impulses and brain structure are still being studied to examine how it can do the things it does.

You have enzymes, bodily fluids and organs that when exposed under microscopes denote even more wonder and marvel. How did the body come together to create something that functions so well? And why do they allow us to have such complex neurological and biochemical responses?

Why can I breathe, sleep, and dream without thought? Why am I so habitual in many ways of movements and behaviour?

No one but a great designer could have created or manufactured such a marvel of ingenuity.

The Excuse Of Man

The Apostle Paul says again that
“… the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” Romans 1:20 (KJV)

He was trying at the time to correct Romans and the pagan world on their thinking that created things should be worshipped. Or that the carnal efforts of this life should mean as much to you as God.

The wonder about life and “who is God” is not new. That’s why people presume Christians operate by a “blind faith” or “delusions.”

Maybe this blind faith isn’t a lack of seeing at all. Maybe it is us not attuning back to the God who made us, saved us and has a meaning for us. Maybe stepping out with courage to the unknown is actually us finding back where we came from in the first place.

Faith eventually leaves clues to the evidence of things we cannot see (Hebrews 11:1-2).
